HIKING BAGA FALLS POLANCO: A Guide to the Waterfall, Trek Experience, and Itinerary
There is a serene beauty in Zamboanga del Norte that is honestly unexplainable.
Exploring my home province’s less-explored spots has taught me that nature has a way of giving you exactly what you need, from lush green mountains to the blissful sound of water cascading down.
Hiking Baga Falls in Polanco is one of those experiences that makes you feel truly lucky to be alive.
Baga Falls Fast Facts
Baga Falls is a raw, enchanting waterfall tucked away in the woodlands of San Pedro, Polanco. Because it isn’t a mainstream commercial spot yet, it offers a peaceful escape for those willing to venture off the beaten path. It’s the kind of place where you can hear the heart of the forest beating.
- Location: Brgy. San Pedro, Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte
- Status: Semi-developed / Emerging destination
- Best Time to Visit: Early morning (around 6:00 AM)
- Entry Fee: Logbook registration at the mountain resort
I tried looking for photos online to give myself a heads-up of what it looks like, but nothing I saw really satisfied me. The excitement was inexpressible—not just because it was my first waterfall here, but because I knew I’d be meeting new people. I was just so damn excited.
Things To Do in Baga Falls Polanco
While the area is relatively untouched, it is the perfect playground for nature lovers and soul-searchers. Whether you want an adrenaline rush or a quiet moment with a book, the falls provide a stunning backdrop for both.
- Mindful Meditation: The base of the falls is a great spot to literally sit back and just breathe.
- Rock Tower Building: Channel your inner artist by stacking stones along the riverbank.
- Swimming & Cliff Jumping: For the brave, there are rock formations you can jump from—but please, only do this if you’re a confident swimmer!
- Coffee with a View: Nothing beats the smell of brewed coffee mixing with the misty mountain air.
I watched my friends lay out picnic blankets and prepare brewed coffee. In that moment, I realized how much I missed this lifestyle. I’m determined never to forget this feeling again. I even jumped into the water from the rocks! I was overthinking it, worried I’d slip, but I did it anyway. It was blissful.
How To Get To Baga Falls Polanco
Reaching this hidden gem requires a bit of planning as public transport isn’t directly available to the trail’s starting point. It’s an adventure that starts the moment you leave the city.
- From Dipolog City: The best way is via private vehicle (2-wheel or 4-wheel).
- Travel Time: Approximately 1 hour to 1.5 hours.
- The Route: Head toward Polanco and ask locals for directions to the “Mountain Resort” in San Pedro where the trek begins.
Call time was 5:00 AM. We traveled from Pagsalabuk Circle as the sun started to rise. There’s nothing like the feeling of the sun touching your skin on a cold, foggy morning road trip. That is what it feels like to be truly living.

What to Expect (The Hike)
Don’t let the short distance fool you! The trail to Baga Falls is a bit of a “Jekyll and Hyde” experience—it starts incredibly easy but gets challenging very quickly as you descend to the base.
- Difficulty: Moderate (Scale of 2-7/9
- Trek Time: 15–20 minutes, depending on your pace.
- Terrain: Flat riverbeds followed by a very steep, slippery descent.
I was told the hike would only take 5 minutes, so I thought, ‘Easy peasy!’ But the trail down is steep as hell. Your life could be at stake with a single mistake, so you have to be extra careful. We were literally gripping onto long tree roots just to stay upright. It goes from a level 2 to a level 9 real quick!
Important Things To Know when Hiking to Baga Falls Polanco
Before you pack your bags, remember that nature deserves our respect. Being a responsible traveler means coming prepared and leaving the place as beautiful as you found it.
- Check the Weather: Avoid going if it has been raining heavily. The base is deep, and the water can overflow dangerously.
- Pack Light but Smart: Bring a water bottle and some snacks, as there are no stores at the falls.
- Safety First: Go with someone who knows the trail. If you decide to jump or swim, do so at your own risk.
- Leave No Trace: Always take your trash back with you.
To sum it up, this is a must-do for anyone looking to recharge in the lap of nature. After building friendships over steaming hot cups of coffee and instant noodles, I went home feeling blissful. The heavy fall of water has a power like nothing else.
