PIÑAHON ISLAND: The Unspoiled Gem of Sibutad

White sand, crystal clear water, and a laidback life — these are some of the reasons why I absolutely fell in love with Piñahon Island.

Located right here in Sibutad, the beautiful coastal municipality in Zamboanga del Norte where I was born, you will surely love Piñahon Island as much as I do. The island has always been this beautiful, of course, but I never got to truly appreciate its raw, unspoiled charm before like I do today, now that I am grown up. If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path escape with breathtaking natural beauty, keep reading!

How To Get To Piñahon Island

Piñahon Island is accessible through a short boat ride from Libay’s mainland port. While the journey is a bit longer than getting to more mainstream destinations, it’s entirely worth the effort to reach this pristine paradise.

Land Trip to Libay Port (Sibutad)

From Dipolog City, you will need to take a land trip to Libay Port in Sibutad, typically passing through Dapitan City. The travel time is approximately 2 hours.

  • Via Public Transportation: Head to Dipolog City’s Integrated Bus Terminal and look for a van or bus heading toward Sibutad or Rizal. You’ll need to inform the driver or conductor to drop you off near Libay Port.
  • Via Private Transportation: This is the most convenient option. If you don’t own a private vehicle, you may hire a local tricycle/multicab for a direct trip.

Boat Transfer to Piñahon Island

Once you arrive at Libay Port, you can arrange for a boat transfer directly to Piñahon Island.

  • Shared or Private: Both options are usually available on-site. It’s best to negotiate the fare with the boat operators before boarding.
  • Fare Estimate: A round-trip boat transfer costs P600 for a maximum of 10 passengers. This makes it incredibly budget-friendly if you are traveling with a group!
  • Travel Time: The scenic boat ride takes around 20 minutes across the clear blue water.

Amenities in Piñahon Island

The facilities on Piñahon are basic but sufficient for an authentic island experience.

Cottage & Shelter Rental:

Cottages, tables, and chairs are available for rent, or you can find a corner to set up your own camp.

  • Cottage rentals range from P500 to P1,000.
  • Tables and chairs are also available for rent for about P200.

Food and Supplies:

There is a small sari-sari store where you can buy basic necessities like water, soft drinks, perhaps noodles, canned foods, and basic condiments.

Do not rely on this store for your main meals. Please bring any and all food and drinks you need for the day.

Wash Area:

  • Comfort rooms (not a modern one) are available for use.
  • Be aware that there is no modern shower area. Instead, there are large drums filled with saltwater near the comfort room that you can use for rinsing off after a swim.

Cooking:

A communal dirty kitchen and grilling station is available for guests to use. If you want to set up a private grill near your cottage or camp area, you should ask the island caretaker for permission and guidance.

Overnight in Piñahon Island

For those seeking a deeper connection with nature, an overnight stay on Piñahon Island is definitely possible and highly recommended!

Currently, there is no separate overnight fee to stay on the island.

Important Note on Electricity: The island does not have 24/7 electricity. Power is supplied only by a generator, which runs for limited hours (usually evening only). If you plan to stay overnight, bring power banks, flashlights, and be prepared to truly disconnect.

If you’re a camper, a nature lover, and someone who genuinely wants to take a break from screens, Piñahon Island is your ideal destination. Because the island maintains its raw beauty and lacks the modern convenience of constant electricity, it is best enjoyed by fully immersing yourself in the moment.

Take a breather from the hassle of the city, less gadget use, listen to the waves, and appreciate the star-studded sky that only a place like Piñahon can offer.
