Why Visit Bohol?

Bohol is one of the few destinations in the Philippines that offers a little bit of everything. You can spend one day exploring the famous Chocolate Hills, another snorkeling with sea turtles in Balicasag Island, and the next working from a beachfront café before ending the afternoon with a freedive. It’s a destination that easily blends adventure, nature, history, beaches, and good food without feeling rushed.

What I love most about Bohol is how flexible it is. If you enjoy fast-paced adventures, you can go island hopping, ziplining, and canyon adventures. If you’re more into slow travel like I am, Panglao has plenty of cafés, beach resorts, and dive communities where it’s easy to stay for weeks without getting bored.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN BOHOL

Bohol is a large province, but most travelers use Panglao Island as their base because it’s close to the airport, beaches, restaurants, and dive shops. These are the experiences I recommend the most after visiting the island multiple times.

Join the Bohol Countryside Tour

BOHOL COUNTRYSIDE TOUR: Complete Travel Guide, 6 Best Attractions, Itinerary, Cost, and Tips

Freediving in Bohol is one of the biggest reasons I keep coming back to Bohol. Panglao has some of the most accessible dive sites in the country, whether you’re a complete beginner or already certified.

Some dive sites are currently under rehabilitation, but there are still plenty of incredible places to explore beneath the surface.

Best Dive Spots in Bohol

  1. Napaling Crack – The most famous spot in Panglao for the massive sardines run. It’s accessible right from the shore!
  2. Balicasag Island– A marine sanctuary famous for its sea turtle encounters and schools of jacks.
  3. Bohol Plane Wreck – no longer exists as of 2025.
  4. Lila Whaleshark – under rehabilitation as of 2025.
  5. #FREEDIVING – A good side trip spot when you visit Lila Whaleshark.
  6. Estaca Reef – A reef spot for me near the Virgin Island, yet under rehabilitation as of 2025.

Most dive sites can be enjoyed by beginners with the help of a local guide or certified instructor.

Hike Alicia Panoramic Park

For hikers and photographers, Alicia Panoramic Park offers one of the most scenic landscapes in Bohol. The rolling green hills become even more beautiful at sunrise, especially if you’re lucky enough to catch a sea of clouds.

  • Guide fee required
  • Best visited before sunrise
  • Around a two-hour drive from Panglao

Try Jetski & Wakeboarding

One of my newest discoveries in Bohol was wakeboarding in Tagbilaran. I actually found it through TikTok and decided to try it before it became more popular, and it didn’t disappoint.

The wakeboarding area sits beside Becca Café x Bistro, making it a fun place to spend the afternoon before enjoying dinner by the water.

How to Get to Bohol

Getting to Bohol is easier than ever, thanks to direct flights from major cities in the Philippines and convenient ferry routes from neighboring islands. Whether you’re arriving by air or sea, you’ll most likely start your trip in Panglao or Tagbilaran City.

By Air

The fastest way to reach Bohol is by flying into Bohol-Panglao International Airport (TAG).

Domestic Flights

  • Manila → Panglao
  • Cebu → Panglao
  • Davao → Panglao
  • Iloilo → Panglao

These routes are primarily operated by Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines.

For international flights, Panglao Airport serves direct routes to Seoul and Busan in South Korea operated by Jeju Air, Jin Air, and Air Busan.

By Sea

If you’re already traveling around the Visayas, taking the ferry is another convenient option. Daily fast ferries connect Tagbilaran City with several nearby destinations.

Popular Ferry Routes

  • Cebu → Tagbilaran
  • Dumaguete → Tagbilaran
  • Siquijor → Tagbilaran

OceanJet remains one of the most popular ferry operators for these routes.

From Tagbilaran Port

Once you arrive, it’s easy to get to Panglao Island where most travelers stay.

Transportation Travel Time Estimated Fare
Shared Van 25–40 mins ₱100–150
Tricycle/TukTuk 20–30 mins ₱200–300
Taxi 15–20 mins ₱400–600

If you’re staying in Anda or another municipality in Bohol, take a V-Hire or public bus to Dao Integrated Bus Terminal before transferring to your next ride.

Getting Around Bohol

Bohol is a large province, but getting around is relatively easy depending on where you plan to explore.

Rent a Scooter (My Favorite Option)

This is my favorite way to travel around Panglao. It gives you the freedom to chase sunsets, café-hop, visit beaches, and stop anywhere you like without worrying about transportation schedules.

  • Rental Cost: ₱350–₱500 per day
  • Driver’s license required
  • Best for solo travelers and couples
  • Fuel is inexpensive and stations are easy to find

If you’re comfortable riding a motorbike, I highly recommend this option.

Ride a Tuktuk

IMG 3592

If you don’t drive, tuk-tuks are everywhere around Panglao and are perfect for short trips between beaches, cafés, restaurants, and accommodations.

Estimated Fare

  • Short rides: around ₱50
  • Longer rides: ₱150–300

Always agree on the fare before starting your trip.

Hire a Private Car

For longer trips around mainland Bohol—especially the Countryside Tour—a private car with a driver is one of the most comfortable options. It’s ideal for families, groups, or travelers who simply want a hassle-free day exploring the island.

Where to Stay in Panglao

I’ve stayed in several accommodations throughout my trips to Bohol, switching between hostels and private resorts depending on whether I was diving, working remotely, or simply taking a vacation. These are the places I’d happily recommend.

Abraham Bohol (My Favorite Hostel)

If I had to recommend just one hostel in Panglao, it would be Abraham Bohol.

It’s close to the airport and only a short ride from Alona Beach, making it a convenient base for solo travelers. The social atmosphere makes it easy to meet other travelers, while the facilities are comfortable enough for longer stays.

Abraham Bohol is best for solo travelers, digital nomads, and backpackers.

Other Places I’ve Stayed

  • Moon Fools Hostel – A budget-friendly hostel near Alona Beach with female, male, and mixed dormitories. A light breakfast is included.
  • Mad Monkey Panglao – Perfect if you’re looking for a lively social atmosphere and want to meet travelers from around the world.
  • Captain’s Lodge – A simple and affordable accommodation within easy reach of Alona Beach.
  • Ultra Mint Dive Resort – A dive-focused resort with dormitory options and easy access to several dive shops around Panglao.
  • Bohol Cattleya Resort – A comfortable mid-range resort that’s ideal for families and small groups looking for a quieter stay.

3 Best Beaches in Panglao

Whenever I’m in Panglao, I somehow end up by the beach—even if I’m not planning to swim. Sometimes I’ll bring my laptop to work by the shore, other times I’ll simply grab a coffee and watch the sunset. If you’re wondering where to spend a slow afternoon, these are my favorite beaches in Panglao.

Alona Beach

Alona is the heart of Panglao. It is the busiest and most popular beach in Panglao. It’s the main jump-off point for island hopping tours and is lined with restaurants, cafés, bars, dive shops, and resorts.

Why Visit

  • Main tourist hub in Panglao
  • Island hopping departure point
  • Plenty of restaurants and nightlife
  • Great for people-watching

While it’s my least favorite beach because of the crowds, I still think every first-time visitor should experience Alona during the day and again at night.

Oceanica Resort (Formerly South Palms)

This has become my little post-freedive tradition. After a day underwater, I usually head here to relax, grab a snack, and enjoy the peaceful beachfront before calling it a day.

Why Visit

  • Wide white-sand beach
  • Relaxing atmosphere
  • Beautiful sunset views
  • Beachfront restaurant and café

Walk-in guests are welcome, but make sure to order food or drinks as a courtesy since it’s a private resort.

Bohol Beach Club

best beach in bohol panglao

If you’re looking for a quieter beach with fewer crowds, Bohol Beach Club is one of the most beautiful private beaches in Panglao. The powdery white sand, clear water, and rows of coconut trees make it one of my favorite places to simply slow down.

Why Visit

  • Crystal-clear water
  • Peaceful atmosphere
  • Excellent for photos
  • Less crowded than Alona Beach

💡 Tips for Visiting Private Resorts as a Walk-in Guest

If you aren’t staying at these luxury resorts but want to enjoy their beaches, here is how to do it respectfully:

  • Always Order Something: Whether it’s a fresh mango shake, a snack, or a coffee, it’s common courtesy to be a paying customer if you’re using their space.
  • Be Respectful: Remember that there are guests paying a premium to stay there. Keep your noise level down and be kind to the staff.
  • Golden Hour is Best: I recommend going between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to enjoy the sunset. If you want to stay for dinner, call ahead to reserve a table.
