Surfing in Dahican Mati: My First Time Experience and Guide

Birthdays are always a great excuse to try something new, and this year, I decided to tick off a big one from my bucket list: learning how to surf.

As someone whose life revolves around the ocean, it honestly felt long overdue. I spend most of my time freediving, exploring beaches, and chasing adventures in the water. The sea has always been my happy place, so celebrating another year around the sun by trying a new ocean sport felt like the perfect gift to myself.

Although I technically had my first surfing lesson in Siargao back in 2019, I barely remember anything from that experience. Maybe it was too short, maybe I wasn’t fully invested at the time, or maybe life just happened. Either way, my surfing experience in Dahican Beach felt like my true first time.

And what a memorable first time it was.

About Dahican Beach

Dahican Beach is one of the most famous destinations in Mati City, Davao Oriental. Known for its long stretch of golden sand, clear waters, and laid-back atmosphere, it has become a favorite spot for beach lovers, skimboarders, and surfers.

Several resorts line the coastline, but the most popular among surfers is Dahican Surf Resort. This was where I stayed during my trip and where I decided to finally give surfing a serious try.

Surf instructors and guides are usually around the resort, making it easy for beginners to inquire about lessons. There’s no complicated booking process. Simply approach one of the instructors, ask about the lessons, and they’ll help you get started.

What to Expect During Your First Surfing Lesson

At Dahican Surf Resort, a beginner surfing lesson costs around PHP 500. The package typically includes:

  • Basic surfing theory lesson and briefing
  • Introduction to surfing equipment
  • Free use of a beginner-friendly soft-top surfboard
  • Instructor assistance in the water
  • Approximately one hour of surfing experience
  • Photos (additional fee, but optional)

During the briefing, I learned about the different types of surfboards and basic surfing techniques. Beginners usually start with a soft-top surfboard, often called a “foamy.”

These boards are designed to be more stable, buoyant, and forgiving than traditional fiberglass boards, making them ideal for first-time surfers.

My First Surfing Experience in Dahican Mati

I spent about 30 minutes learning the basics. The instructor taught us how to position ourselves on the board, how to paddle, when to stand up, and the proper stance once we’re riding a wave. It all looked surprisingly easy while standing on the sand.

After the briefing, it was time to put theory into practice and head into the water.

The first few attempts involved plenty of falling, swallowing saltwater, and trying to figure out where exactly my feet were supposed to go. Every time I thought I had it figured out, another wave would send me tumbling back into the ocean.

I kept trying until, for a few brief seconds, I stood up. I wasn’t graceful. I wasn’t fast. But I was standing, and that short ride felt incredible.

For someone who spends a lot of time underwater through freediving, surfing introduced me to a completely different relationship with the ocean. Instead of diving beneath the waves, I was learning how to move with them.

How to Prepare for Your First Surfing Experience

A little preparation can make your first surfing experience much more enjoyable.

  • Get Enough Sleep – Surfing requires balance, coordination, and a surprising amount of energy. I learned this the hard way. If possible, get a full night’s sleep before your lesson. Your body will thank you later.
  • Stay Hydrated – You’ll be spending time under the sun while constantly paddling and moving around. Bring plenty of water and consider drinking electrolytes before and after your session.
  • Eat a Light Meal – Surfing can be physically demanding, especially for beginners. Eat something light but filling before your lesson so you’ll have enough energy without feeling overly full.
  • Apply Reef-Safe Sunscreen – You’ll likely spend an hour or more exposed to the sun. Protect your skin by applying sunscreen before heading into the water.
  • Wear Comfortable Swimwear – Choose swimwear that stays secure even when waves knock you around. Rash guards are also helpful for sun protection and preventing board rash.

Tips for First-Time Surfers

If you’re trying surfing for the first time, here are a few things I wish I knew beforehand:

  • Don’t expect to stand up immediately.
  • Falling is part of the learning process.
  • Listen carefully during the briefing.
  • Relax and enjoy the experience.
  • Celebrate small wins, even if it’s only standing up for a few seconds.
  • Focus on having fun rather than being perfect.

Every surfer starts somewhere.

Why You Need to Try Surfing at Least Once

Being near the ocean has always felt like home to me. I always find myself constantly drawn back to the sea.

Surfing gave me a different way to experience that connection. Unlike many activities where you’re competing against other people, surfing feels more like learning to work with nature. You learn to read the waves, adapt to changing conditions, and trust your instincts.

The experience forces me to be present.
