FREEDIVING IN CAMIGUIN: Mantigue Island, Costs, and Dive Itinerary

I never really expected much when I went freediving in Camiguin Island for the first time, but it turned out to be an amazing experience that I’ll never forget.

That first trip left such a mark on me that I always knew I had to go back.

One of the highlights of freediving in Camiguin is definitely Mantigue Island. This small gem off the coast of Mahinog is one of the most enchanting spots I’ve ever experienced. The moment you step off the boat, you’ll already feel how untouched and protected the place is. No noisy vendors, no big crowds—just simple cottages where you can leave your things.

How To Get to Mantigue Island

  • Head to San Roque Docking area in Mahinog.
  • Pay the environmental fees and arrange your boat rental.
  • Each boat caters to a maximum of 6 people.

The underwater environment in Mantigue Island is full of surprises. The first time I dove here, I saw a huge turtle swimming gracefully right in front of me—I honestly froze for a few seconds in awe.

The reef is also home to giant clams, schools of jacks, and a wide variety of marine life that makes every dive exciting. It’s the kind of place where you can spend hours just exploring and still feel like you haven’t seen enough.

Mantigue Island Dive Tips

  • Currents can get strong in Mantigue, so always be careful. Stick close to your group or your local guide.
  • Hiring a local guide is required whether you’re a beginner or already certified. They’ll meet you once you arrive on the island, and you pay them directly.
  • Please remember: Do not touch any marine life. Respect the reef and leave everything as it is.

SODA WATER POOL

If you enjoy dynamic training, you’ll definitely love freediving in the Soda Water Pool in Camiguin Island. It’s not a typical freedive spot in the ocean, but rather a natural freshwater pool with crystal-clear visibility.

When I went the first time, the Soda Water Pool turned into both a training ground and a playground.

Since the water is calm and visibility is amazing, we did a few laps and even had some fun taking underwater photos (yes, an awra shoot had to happen!).

It’s one of those spots that combines practice with pure enjoyment, especially if you’re diving with friends.

🧜‍♀️ SODA WATER POOL DIVE TIPS:
  • Since it’s freshwater, you’ll feel more buoyant differently compared to the sea—adjust your weights if you’re using them.
  • Great spot for dynamic apnea training because of the pool’s length and visibility.
  • Watch your breath-up—because the water is cooler, it’s easy to overexert if you’re not mindful.
  • Always dive with a buddy even if it’s “just a pool”—safety first!
  • Bring your own mask, snorkel, or fins since rentals aren’t always available.
  • The pool area has cottages and tables if you plan to hang out longer—perfect for resting in between dives.
